Meet the Members
A Note of Thanks from Bosco:
I am honored and very proud of you. When I see your e-mails as well as overhearing the talk about the different races your running in and Bosco's Buddies, I get choked up. I can't thank you enough for your involvement and your dedication to this cause. I know you have many other commitments and obligations in your life, but what you're doing for Bosco's Buddies/HCV Awareness/Liver Disease can't be measured. "One small step for man, one giant leap for humankind!"

My name is Pam Allen. I work on the Child Study Team (LDTC) in the Fair Haven, NJ school system. I've been running since 1978. I ran my first marathon in 1982 and have completed 27 marathons since then. I ran some of them fast, some slow, some with friends, some on my own, some close by, some far away, some with as many as 40,000 runners, and some with as few as 100 runners. I would have to say that my most memorable marathon experience was running the New York City Marathon last year (unofficially) with Bosco and his twenty-something buddies!
Diana Burton is "especially proud to be a member and supporter of Bosco’s Team. They say, ‘to know him is to love him’ and this is Bosco, a most giving and special person who never asks anything for himself and is full of encouragement and support. When I joined NJRRC, I was a walker and wannabe runner, and I thought running skills might rub off if I consistently came to the NJRRC scheduled Sunday runs. That was only early 2002 and since then this team, of which Bosco is a mainstay, has encouraged me into marathons and volunteering and I’ve even earned my 100+ Sunday-runs pin. I’m sure to never forget my very first race, the E. Murray Todd half-marathon in March 2002, when Bosco took control and paced me. He knew I’d never seen a start line let alone a race. He later encouraged me onto the NJ Marathon in April 2002, and the NYC Marathon in November 2002 where I finished in 4:46. This is no little accomplishment since I’m 59 and new to running. I have new and continued marathon commitments to include NYC and Palm Beach in November, Flying Pigs in May and Steamtown in October. My goal is to get coaching and see what one can do at 60. My training is sometimes challenged by my commute from my home in NJ to my office in Florida where I work as a vice president of investor relations for Jacuzzi Brands, Inc. My husband, Tom, serves as wonderful support and will readily cook up pasta dinners; he still however just rolls his eyes at the mention of running 26.2 miles. My parents, daughter and 19 year old grandson live in the Midwest and they probably think I’m crazy. If this is crazy, it’s just what I want to be!"
Art Castellano is a veteran of nearly 80 marathons and now finds himself running marathons for others. He is the Race Director of the New Jersey Marathon (now in its 9th year) and President of the New Jersey Road Runners Club (NJRRC) who enjoys, as Bosco's Buddies catch phrase says, "Running for a Cause...Not Just Because!"
To all who feel that the marathon distance is just too much of a challenge Art says, "go out to the finish of a marathon and look at the variety of shapes and sizes of the finishers. You'll then realize why marathon participation is open to all and is mainly a commitment. A commitment primarily to yourself and, almost as importantly, to a cause. In my case it is to Bosco's Buddies and my dearest friend, George 'Bosco' Boscarino."
Stephanie Goldbaum--I began running with the running club shortly after I had given birth to my second child. My goal was to lose some weight I had gained during my pregnancies. From the first run I was hooked. I've met some wonderful people, and with the help of my new friends I ran my first marathon in April. I am now hoping to complete my second marathon on November 7. This time I am running with my friends for a wonderful cause--the fight against Hepatitis C. I am proud to be running with Bosco's Buddies. I would like to take a moment to thank Bosco for all the water stops and for all the other behind the scenes things he does for the NJRRC as well as for all the work he does in the fight against Hepatitis C.
My name is Lisa Gross, and I am relatively new to running distance. I ran cross country in high school, to get in shape, never for time. After college I became a walker because I thought running was unattainable. I would try to run in college, but never on a consistent basis. I joined the NJRRC last Fall, again to get in shape. What I discovered was a large group of generous, helpful and outgoing people who achieve many goals. I only dreamed of running a marathon, but last spring I completed my first marathon. I know the only reason I completed the marathon was because of the impact the NJRRC has on its members. I got the runners high. After that your confidence in yourself soars and all goals in all aspects of life become attainable with consistent persistence, endurance, training and sweat. Running the NY City Marathon is an honor, an honor to appreciate George Boscarino, an outstanding member of the NJRRC who takes such vital part in the club, and who makes all of our dreams attainable. I am happy to run for a cause, a cause for someone I know.
From Debbie Hummel:
"If you were to overcome every obstacle, and filled your life with everything you were passionate about, what would you be doing?"
That's the question I was pondering as I took a walk that sunny, cold morning on January 16th. I was bored. With my job, my social life, you name it. It was on that day that, unbeknownst to me, that I started blooming into a runner, and I changed. And every day thereafter, as I put one foot in front of the other, making small changes in my life, my pace quickened, and I started to run. I had never run more than 6 miles in my life. At mile 10, I joined NJRRC, and was introduced to brilliant, charismatic, extraordinary people. I started to run in races, and through each finish line, the obstacles in my life diminished. At mile 16, I went back to school. At mile 22, I've begun my new career as a Life Coach.
Mile 26 is the summit. Just 4.2 miles away. I've been running toward it since that day in January. I've just registered the name of my new business, and as I burst through the finish line on November 7th, the doors will open for me and my new business. It just fits that I've decided to call it Summit Coaching......Take a step, and another one. Keep going, and all your dreams will come true.
Hello, my name is Courtney Johnson, and I'm a twenty-four year old eager to run the NYC Marathon for Bosco's Buddies! I graduated from Brown University in 2003 and have spent the past year working in Boston and I am currently traveling in Australia and playing professional Ice Hockey. I have completed two Boston Marathons running for the American Liver Foundation's Run For Research team. I heard about Bosco's Buddies via the ALF and immediately inquired about the joining process.
My father passed away from liver cancer in October of 2002 and since then I have committed myself to helping those afflicted by liver disease. Bosco's Buddies interests me because it stresses Hepatitis C awareness. Awareness, in my opinion, is the first step to efficient fundraising which will eventually bring future cures to those in need.I look forward to running for this remarkable cause and I am honored to be a part of such a great group of individuals who are all sacrificing their time and bodies to make life a little bit easier for those fighting this disease. I can't wait to meet my teammates on November 7th in NYC!
Ian Lifchus is a Charter Member of NJRRC and an active member of the NJM Staff. With "almost 200 Sunday Runs", Ian enjoys the NJRRC's family environment, Art's cooking and the lovely course that we run every week. As far as running highlights, they include (1) my first marathon in Philly, (2) the heart pounding noise on Boston's Boyleston Street, (3) running 26.2 Miles with Pam Allen, Jim Trezza and Art Castellano at Walt Disney World, (4) the unrelenting encouragement of Jim, Larry Marchak and John Dobrowski who pulled me through the 34-Mile Garden State UltraMarathon and (5) seeing the tears of joy on the face of George Boscarino as we escorted him across the NYC Marathon finish line.
From Sue Ann Ng: Running has given me a different lifestyle and has been my main focus since I lost 60 lbs. in 6 months back in 1996, starting with walking. Walking led to trotting, trotting to jogging. I ran my first Marathon in 1998 (NYC). This year's marathon will be my 24th marathon in total! I do not run these marathons for time. If someone needs me to be with them during a run or marathon, I will stay with them the entire way to bring them to the finish line. My year round training has given me a very healthy and happy outlook on life as well as being involved in the different facets of the NJRRC. I try to do what I can for everyone at the NJRRC since they are a big part of my family. George aka Bosco is my family!
Sue Ann's Recap of the 2003 ING NYC Marathon
From Joey Santoro... To all my fellow Bosco's Buddies: I've been running steadily for a little over 20 yrs. I didn't start running (long distance) till around 1997, when I met George and Art and a whole lot of other great people. I ran my first marathon in 1999, which was the Jersey Shore Marathon in around 4:26. After feeling so lousy afterwards, I told myself that was it for me and one was enough. A year later I found myself training for Philly. The week before the race I fell in Huber Woods and got banged up pretty good. I still went and gave it the old college try. I only was able to make it to mile 14 because of the pain in my leg. I also ran Richmond and Boston, finishing both, but again not having good experiences in either one. Now onto New York. I'm proud to be a part of Bosco's Buddies and proud to have George as a friend. I've never met a more giving person and someone so determined to make people aware of this debilitating disease. That's why I'm here taking on this task. I hope we all have a good time running together and we all have a great experience doing so. See you all soon...
Tom Tramaglini – A running enthusiast from Monmouth Beach, NJ has been running for about 8 years. Although a veteran of many races including several half-marathons around the United States, he recently completed his first marathon in Baltimore running for Bosco’s Buddies. Tom is a school administrator in Freehold, NJ and takes pride in running races in honor of his grandmother, Anna Tramaglini. In 2005, He began an organization called Running for Anna and Friends, which seeks to run races and donate to worthy causes in Anna’s name. “I cannot think of a better cause to run for than Hepatitis C awareness.” People like Bosco are heroes to all of us. We watch them fight for something and admire what they do because of their courage.” I proudly take the name Buddy of Bosco – I ask those who are not the question, why?

Graduating tops in the class of all his academics are not the only accomplishments Dr. Morgan has under his belt. He has achieved many personal goals that include Personal Training Management in a national training center as well maintaining personal programs for his own client list.
Much of Dr Morgan’s drive comes from within, such as, his determination to achieve a less than 5% body fat with a muscular physique weighing over 200 lbs. Additional challenges came when a friend convinced him to go for a “short jog”, 3 miles later he soon realized to respect running and the cardiovascular training it takes to run. That summer he trained hard and then completed his 1st Marathon.
While training for his 1st marathon, he realized how much training, support and medical attention it takes to safely run any distance even a marathon. After years of medical training he understands the needs of runners, and can confidently address their concerns. “Running can take a toll on the body if a person is not prepared”. |
